A missing tooth can pose several disadvantages, both from the aesthetic and functional point of view. It also affects the self-confidence of a person and can entirely take away their smile. Hence, dentists always recommend their patients, who have undergone an extraction, to get their tooth replaced by a dental implant.
Dental Implants are combinations of a metal post (titanium), representing the tooth root, and a ceramic prosthetic representing the tooth crown. They replace a tooth from root to crown and enable the patient to bite, chew and talk like before. The best part is that they look, feel and function exactly like natural teeth. Our highly experienced dentists in Gila Ridge dental have conducted numerous implant surgeries in the past and are some of the best in the Yuma, AZ region.
Are you the right candidate for dental implants?
Our dentists would carry out a thorough examination of your oral set up to determine whether or not you are the right candidate for implants. Some of the factors they consider are as follows:
- The amount of jawbone present
- The spacing available for placing the implant
- Whether or not the teeth have drifted from their sockets after the extraction
- The gum health
- Accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth
- Smoking habits
- Health condition (Diabetes, Blood Pressure, etc.) and dental history (previous surgeries, restorations, dental infections, etc.)
- Oral hygiene
The teeth will be prepared prior to the implant surgery. Local anesthesia will be administered to numb the teeth and gums so that the patient won’t feel any pain during the procedure. The dentist would make a small incision on the gums, through which a hole would be made on the jawbone to fit the implant post. It will be carefully inserted in place and allowed to heal for a few weeks. During this time, the gum tissues would regrow around the implant and the jawbone would firmly hold on to it.
When the healing period is completed, you would have to visit our practice to get the crown fitted on the implant. The crown would be fabricated in a laboratory with high accuracy and made to look exactly like a natural tooth. It will then be attached to the implant with the help of an abutment and dental adhesives. The bite adjustment will be made and the implant would be polished to improve its aesthetics.
