Is It Safe To Get Dental Treatment During the COVID-19 Pandemic? (Part 3)
When people search the phrase “Is it safe to get dental treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic?” They may run into some different types or ways a dental office is cleaned and disinfected. In healthcare and specifically in dentistry, we have always followed what is called ‘Universal Precautions.’ Some may also call it ‘Standard Precautions.’
There have always been many viruses and bacteria that can travel via saliva, which we have been well aware of for decades. In dentistry, we have always known to follow Universal Precautions to prevent the spread of any infectious disease. COVID-19 is a virus that we treat just like other types of infectious diseases that we have been protecting our patients against.
These precautions that we follow are very specific cleaning guidelines and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) that we wear and dispose of properly to prevent the spread of any types of infectious diseases. Special cleaning products are used to disinfect our operatories that will kill the COVID-19 virus. We have also been using those cleaning products to disinfect our front office where people check in and check out so we can decrease the spread of the coronavirus.
Along with these cleaning protocols we also use an autoclave which sterilizes any instruments that we use with our patients. The autoclave is a machine that uses elevated temperature and pressure to kill any living organism. We use this for any instrument that goes into the patient’s mouth. This machine will definitely kill COVID-19. We want to make sure that our patients know that we are cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing to kill COVID-19 and keep our patients safe and healthy.
